Good Evening From The Candido Couch

Today has been a snuggle-on-the-couch-and-munch-on-an-apple-while-watching-curious-george kind of day. The babe is one big snot bubble, with a wicked cough and sneeze to go along. Oh, buddy. He goes from running through the house hollering and laughing to melting in my arms, out of breath and exhausted. I hope he can fight this bug off soon. It makes my mama heart so sad!

This week is going to be super low key. A reboot of sorts. I feel like the last few weeks have been a little crazy and I need to tune in to our family's needs and redefine our schedule accordingly. We're going to figure out O's napping schedule if it kills me. It's already killing me the way it's been so cattywampus. He's been waking up 3-4 times a night for about a month now, too, and I'm pretty frazzled. So! Mama is making an executive decision and we are taking a week off. Off of extracurricular activities and off of blogging. Much needed. Much appreciated.

My goals for this week away:

  • Find O's new nap rhythm
  • Inventory of pantry/fridge and refocus meal planning
  • Brainstorm for HappyCandido content/design
  • Plan a date night
  • Have a family business meeting about next quarter
  • Get some friggin sleep

Also, hopefully there will be a lot more snuggling and hanging out with Hugsy the Penguin.
See you soon, friends…

To The Zoo

Dear Ollie,
On Monday, we got to go on our first trip to the zoo! It was surprisingly warm and sunny, the perfect day to visit. I've been wanting to take you for months but for one reason or another, it hadn't worked out. But, ya know? I think this was the perfect time for us to try something new! You loved it. Loved it! We saw penguins and baby jaguars and gorillas and froggies and toucans! You climbed trees and ran through caves with Uncle Josiah, led the way through the trails and had a blast talking to the monkeys. Oo Oo Ee Ee Ee!! :D Oh man, it was the best time, really. Poor Daddy had to stay home and finish a paper that was due that night. He missed out on a great day but don't worry! We will take him again soon and you can show him your favorite animals.

I love exploring new things with you, Buddy. You're Mama's favorite friend and I'm so thankful that Jesus picked me and Daddy to take care of you for Him. I'm doing my best, I hope you know it.

Let's go to the Aquarium next, wanna?!
Love you!!
Love,
Mama

[a witty title that has nothing to do with food but everything to do with our week]

this post is part of my 31 Day series. here is the beginning

Thursday was a weird day. I guess my mind needed some time off because it seemed to be missing all day! The weather was gor.geous. Crisp and bright. Ollie and I went for a nice long walk in the morning, then after nap we explored Discovery Park with Uncle Jordy and his new lens. It was so nice and relaxing. Exactly what I needed but I didn't even know it.
Friday was grocery shopping day. I felt a little overwhelmed because I needed to plan for a week's meals + company! But Ollie was very helpful by keeping a list as we strolled up and down the aisles. ;) And once I had 'groceries' crossed off my to-do list, I felt much better.
Friday evening Camillo and I went on our first dinner date in 14 months! Oh my goodness, you guys. It was blissful. I ate my own dinner without having to feed someone else. And Camillo and I got to talk and visit the whole evening. Just the two of us. *sigh* After dinner, we walked a couple blocks to Bluebird IceCream. I got Phantograham (graham crackers and chocolate, yum!) and Camillo got Elysian Stout. It was supposed to be a beer flavor but he didn't really taste it..Thank you Julia for a grown up date night!! (and here's to more on a regular basis!!)
Saturday Caroline and Maria flew in to Seattle!! The two kidlets are only 5 months apart and they are getting along SO well. They follow each other around and are constantly giving each other hugs and kisses. Cutest thing ever. Ollie is working on saying Maria but it comes out sounding more like Aria! hehe, He loves his friend Aria, too :) I finally got to bake some cookies, too. Did you see that?! Caroline loves them so I might have an excuse to make them again before she leaves. I'll be sure to send a couple all of them home with her ;)
I'll do my best to keep up with my daily posts but please forgive me if I miss [another] day or two. We have family here through the end of the month and we want to cherish our time together. That might mean no blogging for this mama! You can be sure there will still be plenty of eating though ;)

Nothing To Do With Food

this post is part of my 31 Day series. here is the beginning

Ollie feet flailing as he climbed into the submarine through the window!

In honor of my commitment to write every day for 31, I'm here to say goodnight! We had another great day. I just love adventuring with my little nugget. He's my sidekick! We drove down to Olympia to have lunch with my mom and grandma. Since it was stormy outside, we played at the kid place inside the mall. It was perfect! Ollie had a blast and really wore himself out. Mama's pretty tired, too. Thankfully, I'd put a pork tenderloin in the crockpot before we left!! I got home and made up some mashed potatoes (frozen from Trader Joe's!) and peas. Delicious! :)

Night night!

93rd

Yesterday was my grandma's 93rd birthday! We celebrated over lunch in Tacoma and then dessert at DQ. Ollie is just crazy about Great Grammy and he gives her the most hugs and kisses! It's super sweet to see the two of them together.

It was a nice afternoon even though it was quick. This photo was my favorite of the day..trying to get Ollie to look at the camera but he was too interested in Grammy. I love the smile in Jordan's eyes, the mischievous look between O and my mom, and how my grandma is snuggling up to her great-grandbaby.

Love you, Gramms! Happy Birthday!

My Monkey and His Uncles

I have three younger brothers. Isaac, Jordan, and Josiah. I love them. And so does Ollie.

Isaac hasn't seen Oliver since November 2012. The photo above was taken the day before he left for Utah to work on the ski slopes and he hasn't been home since! I'm so so so excited that he's on his way back to Washington for a visit. He's kind of a nomad, that brother of mine. I can't wait to hear about his adventures in the desert and the big red rocks of Utah.

Jordan is nice and close, only about 15 minutes away. We get to see him a lot and I'm thankful for that. Ollie gets very excited to see him and reaches for Uncle Jordy as soon as he shows up. He's got a big bushy beard and cool glasses. Ollie's hands are always all over both, ha! It's nice to have a little piece of my family close by to spend time with and share an occasional meal with. And sometimes quiche ;)

Josiah turned 10 years old a month before Ollie was born. He is a really sweet uncle and Ollie just thinks the world of him. We got to do some pretty fun things with Uncle Josiah this summer. We went to the lake, Wild Waves, watched him play a couple baseball games, had some BBQs. Now that Josiah has started school, we might not get to see him as often but it's nice to know he's only a 90 minute drive away.

Oliver also has an Auntie. Oi, Tia Carol!! She's coming for a visit in October and we can't wait to see her! The last time we got to see her was last year when Ollie was only about 2 weeks old. I was still in a lot of pain and recovering so I didn't get to go adventuring with them very much. This time we'll all be together and I'm so excited!

Weekend Recap

Saturday, Camillo and I celebrated 5 years as Mr&Mrs. Five years? I don't feel old enough to have been married that long! We were a young bride and groom, growing up together. It's been a good, hard, rewarding, sometimes frustrating, wonderful, kinda crazy, amazing 5 years of learning how to love each other bigger and better. A couple weeks ago I asked  Camillo (with kind of a pout) if he thought we'd even come very far in the last five years. He assured me that of course we have and, looking through our wedding photos at those two little kids, I agree. For a minute I felt like we should be farther along, better at being married, or whatever. But we've learned so much about one another, built a life together, and started a family together. We're a great team, crazy about each other, and hopeful for another 90 wondrous years together. Love you, babe.
Sunday, this little digger turned 13 months. I've seen a real change in him these last couple weeks. He's more sturdy in his climbing, seems to understand more of what we say, has quit eating sand by the handfuls, and has an imagination that keeps him busy with his dishes, animals, cars, and blocks. Just, grown up! He's got a little attitude that comes out with fake cries and hollers. He's a sweet heart who, at the end of the day, just wants to be with Mama and Daddy. After 2 weeks of not sleeping at all, we've finally found his new rhythm and the last 5 days he only woke up once each night! Glory halelujah!

We had a sentimental weekend with these two milestones. We spent both days together exploring our city and ignoring outside distractions. There were also a couple naps to be had, pizza to be made, and football to be cheered for. It was an excellent weekend for the three Candidos. Hoping the same for your family!

Wednesday, September 4

Oh, September

Hey guys! Happy Wednesday! Happy September! This is only the 4th day of the month and I'm already in love with it. Oh, September.
On the first day, I got to sleep in! Then we laid low the rest of the day and it was lovely. Even Ollie was chill. I seriously can't remember anything else about that day. Ha! Maybe I was sleep walking through all of it..
On the second day, Ollie and I spent the morning with Uncle Jordy at the pie shop. Miss Laniss and Aria met us there and then took Ollie to the playground across the street while I stayed to work on some photo editing. Then we came home so baby could sleep and I spent two hours cutting and sewing! I haven't had that much creativity time since..well, since Ollie was born! I felt amazing. Like, seriously.
On the third day, we went back to the pie shop and this time met Miss Kelsey and Norah. It was a very rainy day but that didn't stop those crazy kids from jumping puddles and going down the water slides Oliver was soaking wet by the end of it all and fell fast asleep on the 10 minute drive home. He didn't even wake up when I took him out of his car seat - and then slept for two hours!! (I can't say this out loud but..I think this 2 hour thing might stick around. Shh! Also, hallelujah!!)

Now, I'm putting on my running shoes and heading out into the cool, overcast morning for a run. Best weather for a run if you ask me. It's gonna be a great day.

What is your favorite month? Does it have anything to do with changing seasons?

Family Water Day

Last week we had a family day at Wild Waves! Camillo and I hadn't been for years so of course Ollie hadn't been yet. The three of us met up with my mama and little brother Josiah. It was one of those trips that I was super excited for but also super anxious about. I knew Ollie would have a great time, but I also knew it would be a long, hot afternoon and that I'd need to prepare accordingly. We walked in from the parking lot with his stroller, diaper bag, lunch, and big duffel bag stuffed full. I felt like we could probably stay for a week.

Just as I suspected Ollie loved the water!! He went down a bunch of slides, ran through the fountains, and bent down to stick his face in the water so many times! Over and over! I took him to the wave pool and he just kicked his feet and laughed and laughed! Oh man, that little laugh is always good for a mama's heart. It melted that day. My heart, I mean. I just love to see Ollie happy. It's the best.

My mom kept the baby for a while so me and Camillo could run off with Josiah and go down some big kid slides. Super fun! I love playing in the water, too I guess. We had fun being silly and running around. When we all met up again, we got dried off and trekked over to the side of the park with all the rides. It was a Monday and the lines weren't very long so we left the baby and the Grammy again and went for a roller coaster ride. The second best part of the day? Camillo's uncontrollable laughter as we were whipped up and down, back and forth, round and round in circles. I asked if he was hamming it up and he said 'No, I've just got the butterflies!' haha The headache and nausea I endured afterwards was totally worth getting to see Camillo having fun. No worries, no text books, just happy. Seriously. It was such an amazing, awesome day. I sure do love my family. I've decided we need a little more fun in our lives. Maybe mama will just skip the roller coaster next time ;)

side note: maybe Ollie inherited Mommy's motion sickness. He looks like he's gonna ralph on the carousel, doesn't he? Sorry, buddy.

Drink Your Cantaloupe

Canteloupe from our garden
photo via flickr

Saturday I started fantasizing about giving Ollie back. Ya know. For just, like, one day. Don't look at me like that, you've totally thought about it, too. It had been a super long week of ear infections, high fevers, molars coming through, needing to be held all day, screaming awake every two hours through the night. I was exhausted and, in a moment of weakness, wondered at the possibility of ever getting a break. I'm confessing this to you so don't judge me.

As I stood over the sink full of dishes, feeling sorry for myself, I looked over to where he sat in his chair. I watched him put a chunk of cantaloupe into his cup and then casually try to drink it. It was so sweet and, at that moment, Jesus softened my heart, gave me a big dose of compassion for my little guy, and a spurt of energy to do the next thing I needed to do. It's not Ollie's fault he's in so much pain. He just wants his mama. And that's me! I get to be his mama. The one he runs to when he just doesn't feel good.

It takes a lot to be a mom. Most importantly, Jesus. I couldn't do these back aching late nights or early mornings without Him.

Another Birthday Celebration and a Musical

For my birthday in June, my mom got us tickets to see the August showing of Sister Act at the Paramount!! Sister Act (1&2!) was my favorite movie growing up. Seriously, all time. Ever since then, I've had a thing for Lauryn Hill, too. I mean. Just listen to her voice! It was the perfect gift, what a fun night! Doesn't my mama look so happy in that top photo?
We parked a few blocks from the theater and started walking. Since we had a little bit of time before the show, we ducked into a little pizza place for a slice and a soda. We kept saying 'this is so nice!' and just relaxed without anybody else needing us to do something for them. It was so amazing. The photo above has a beautiful chandelier in the background. Oops. Missed it. But in my defense, it was 7:28 and we were rushing in. So, quick photo!

The show was a blast. The characters were just like the ones in the movie, and the songs were exciting. I might have wanted to jump up and dance for one or two. But I did not. My mom probably would have been super embarrassed ;)

It was a much needed night out and I enjoyed time with my mama very much. Thanks, Mom and Happy Birthday to me!! ha!

Have you ever been to a musical? What did you see?

Tasty Treats

On Thursday, we took Ollie for his first taste of FroYo. The sample cups are the perfect size for a tiny tot. He tried a little bit of mango and a little bit of raspberry. He loved it. Duh. But then he got a little bit greedy...
Ha! Happy weekend, friends. Go get some frozen yogurt!
